This is what I want for my girls: it isn’t perfect but it’s ours only.
It is a sisters’ world of vacation memories and questions and shared cousins and family. It was baby dolls and early morning cartoons; it was waffle syrup on our nightgowns. It was a few summers in the northern midwest with humid nights and tiny frogs and chasing chickens. It was watching MTV when our parents weren’t home.
It was crying and hurt feelings and old words. It was was the difference between friends-who-were-boys and boyfriends. It was no privacy and no apologies and NO-READING-MY-JOURNAL! It was the paradox of loving and irritation only sisters feel.
It was riding in the back of pickups and weekends in the mountains. It was laughter.
It is growing up and growing out and silence. It is renewed friendship, better understanding and new love. It is adult give and take.
It is spending 4 hours in the car together last Thursday and having so much to talk about. It is giggling about being not-so-young anymore.
It is far from perfect, but it is ours.

It sounds wonderful to have that natural belonging; an unspoken acceptance and respect.
Sisters are sweet!
It is fun to look back on how the relationship changes as you get older.
My sisters are so important to me too, and I wish the same for my daughter. I loved your description.
oh, how badly i want this for my girls, too! how do you instill friendship between your daughters without forcing it? someone please let me know!
I am so happy that you and your sister can still spend 4 giddy hours in a car with much to talk about.
That is why we knew we had to have more than one child…those bonds (it seems to me) are so precious.
Wish I had a real-live sis. But I have a wonderful sister-friend that I value and treasure each day.
what my sister is to me…
she is shared secrets
and whipered dreams.
she is my kindred soul.
my confidant.
she brings me constant
words of wisdom,
unconditional love,
and complete acceptance.
she gives of herself completely,
and opens her heart freely.
she is my companion,
my sworn friend,
my blood sister.
thank you for all that you are.
thank you for your counsil.
thank you for you laughter.
and thank you for your love.
you are simply beautiful.
i love you, sis!
love,
bear
It is something that I never had as an only child. It is something that I am so glad my daughters will have!
i love it! that is what being sisters is all about. it makes me secretly hope that baby #2 is a girl!
What a blessing to have that relationship with your sister! I totally teared up at her comment – wow!
The friendships definitely develop over time – there are many hills and valleys on the journey to being sisters and friends. It takes understanding, maturity, patience, and love – or at least that has been my experience with my sisters.
I want a sister!!! I did grow up with a brother, but we were not close, and I’m afraid to say that we still aren’t. Maybe one day…
This was a sweet post, and even though I don’t have a sister, God has given my some very special friends to fill that empty space.
The sister bond is a special one. Glad you had a good time together!
you two blow my mind…you’re both amazing! love… dad
