Sometimes when I put the girls to bed, each in their own rooms, we get a chance to whisper.
I started whispering to Hope a couple years ago once in awhile if she would have trouble sleeping. After her prayers, I would lay down next to her and whisper suggestions for dreams.
I’d tell her to dream about all the sweet, soft things that little girls should be dreaming about: horses and carrots and big shady trees; walking in cool grass and patting down castles in the sand. I’d make up stories about pretend ponies who would come to her window at night and take her on midnight journeys across the hills.
And all of this I would whisper, facing her as her eyes began to stare.
And as my little one is growing up, I’ve begun to whisper to her too. Tonight, I told her to dream about bright fish in the aquarium and soft, grey cats. I whispered to her about princesses in a castle and long pink dresses.
I’m not sure what exactly she is dreaming about, but the whispering time is special.
This is something special I share with my girls.
My friend, Chrissie, has created an entire blog devoted to suggesstions for creatively spending family time with her own two girls. Read about her wonderful ideas here.

You’re such a good mom! Thanks for letting me interview you and sharing your ideas with us.
I love whispering with my daughter! I have a son too and there is just something so much different about having a girl. Whispering is one of them….. as opposed to playing with Hulk Smash gloves.
Flip Flops and Applesauce?? What the heck is that all about?
Kidding!
Love you Chrissie!!
That is so sweet!
A runner and a writer… I wish you lived closer to Texas. I found your blog on Rebecca’s. What a sweet way to put your girls to bed. I only have boys, but maybe I could whisper engine revving and crashing noises as they drift off. Not quite as soothing as soft kittens and floating fish…
I am so linking you right now. My friends will love this site.
I would trade California for Texas any day! The best running day I ever had was in Orange County on a trail. Pure heaven…
oh, i love this whispering game you play with your girls. so fun and just a beautiful quiet time with them. my kids would love this.
i have checked out flip flops and applesauce- many wonderful, inspiring ideas
)
The whispering idea is fabulous! Thank you for sharing!
I LOVE this idea! What precious time with your girls! I read Chrissie’s blog too (I think I originally found her through you). She has some great ideas, but Adeline is still a bit young for most of them.
I’m so glad you’re on my blogroll now so I don’t miss sweet posts like these!
this whispering idea is great…i cannot wait to try it out!
thanks!
i forgot to mention that i love your “dream ideas”!
It was the sweetest thing when last week my now 10yr old Noah reminded me of our own bedtime “whispers” from when he was 2.
For a time he had had bad dreams about the big bad wolf (he had watched a Blue’s Clues episode with The Three Little Pigs).
We would comfort him by talking about all the things he loved, which always began with banana ice cream, and went on to every type of ball ever made- baseballs, footballs, golf balls, nerf balls…
i was shocked that he remembered.
