At Home with Lucille Ball

Re-runs of “Magnum, P.I.” make me smile.

When I was on bedrest for six weeks during my first pregnancy, I bought Christmas presents online, ate rice cakes and watched “Magnum, P.I.” Tom Selleck in all of his flip-flop wearing glory, prancing around like the James Bond of the Hawaiian Islands, just made me feel comfortable. Two episodes were on every morning, and I wouldn’t miss them. Then I would turn to “Murder, She Wrote.”

[Angela Lansbury makes me smile too.]

They feel like comfort food to me.

Lately I’ve been watching “I Love Lucy” episodes on DVD with my seven-year-old. Lucille Ball’s physical comedy (think vineyards in Italy, or wrapping candy from a conveyor belt) makes us both laugh. I watched them a lot growing up (and they were old then) and I still love them. Sometimes I will even put one on in the living room as I’m cleaning the house. Its as if Desi Arnaz’s familiar Cuban-flavored laughter and slang are comforting…the laugh tracks, all of it. In a strange way, it soothes me. And even though I don’t smoke cigarettes in my apartment and let my three-year-old play the bongos, I wonder if Lucy and Ethel aren’t my friends somehow.

They just make me feel like I’m home.

What TV show makes you feel at home?

Andy Griffith. I can hear my daddy laughing at Barney everytime I watch. It takes me back to my childhood, plus to my older kids younger days when we would tape and watch the Top Twenty episodes.

For the record, my daughter loves Lucy about as much as you do.

  2. Mari says:

    I know who lucy is.
I just wonder when it all ends and we move on to California (heaven).
Sometimes those shows are so comfortable. Like never worrying as a child used to be. ah.

    lucy, of course!

she is comfort food. perfect anytime.
    there is no other.

i have learned a lot from lucy. for instance i recently bought a shirt, stored it away in my closet, never mentioning it to “ricky.” when i finally wore it and he commented, “i said. “this old thing, i’ve had it for months.” it totally worked!

i see my “ethel” (julie) commented.
lucy is no good without ethel.

Hmm…. would be a tossup between M*A*S*H and Star Trek: The Next Generation. Thanks to my parents, these are the TV shows of my childhood, the forays into adulthood that I was allowed after dinner, because it’s what they wanted to watch, either as a re-run or new.

Or Golden Girls! And Family Matters! Nothing like sarcastic seniors and a skinny dweeb to relax to!

  10. Natalie @ I AM (not) says:

Happy Days. Brady Bunch. Scooby Doo (the old ones) and, Lord of the Rings, and While You Were Sleeping. (I know, they’re movies)
Oh…one more…Cosby Show. And Family Ties.

    :)

Your house sounds so much like ours. My wife puts on Andy Griffith, Newhart, Little House on the Prairie, and the Waltons while she works around the house. Our girls love to watch the old shows. I’ve enjoyed reading your thoughts on family and life.
