Resolved: Do it Today

hopeoverexposed

I really hope you aren’t waiting until Friday.

I know Friday signifies the beginning of a new month, a new year and even a new decade. But I sure hope you aren’t waiting until then to start whatever it is you are intending to begin.

You say…

I’ll start Monday.

I’ll begin when it feels right.

It will be my New Year resolution.

Well,

If it is truly a resolution, resolute, resolved, then RESOLVE to begin now. There is nothing keeping you back, right? In reality, if there is something you mean to begin or quit or change then waiting until Friday is just plain dumb.

Start now.

You heard me.  Right now.

Resolve yourself to quit. Decide to change. Purpose to start to be different. Determine to begin.

You say…

I’m going to stop eating cookies.

I will walk every morning to lose that 20 pounds of baby weight still there.

I’m going to stop yelling at my kids.

I’ll finally clean out my closet.

Well I say, don’t wait until Friday. Start today.  Make THAT your resolution: to decide to do something and then do it. Don’t put it off.

What will you DO today?

There’s an old Southern tale (maybe it’s not really just Southern, but that’s how I know it…) that you must finish your laundry before the New Year and that you don’t sweep on New Year’s day… The thought being that you will sweep away good fortune, and that you might “wash away” someone from your life.
I’ve been telling myself that at the first of the year, I will…. do a lot of things.
And you are right… Why wait?
The New Year could start today or 2 weeks from today, and I’d keep putting it off…

Maybe this year, I’ll give in to the superstitions and start my New Year with a clean and organized house.

You are right!! Our resolution is to clean and organize my house!! We don’t have any children yet and my house is so cluttered…closets and drawers are full!

But instead of waiting till Friday….we have picked a room each night this week and cleaning and getting rid of stuff….

room by room….night by night!! Should be done by the New Year! How refreshing!!

    Thanks for the encouragement!!!

Awesome! I SO agree! Gonna start TODAY! Thanks for the encouragement….

I have some dear friends who take the last week of December to do one thing they had never got around to do that year, but MEANT to do. Last year it was painting their spare bedroom. I really loved that idea. Now, if I add in THIS idea, I could start the new year having finished something I meant to do, and already begun something on my new year list. Tricky with family in town all week, but even if it’s small things, I’m gonna do it!!

  5. I’m SO with you! One of my Christmas gifts was a membership to a new fitness club in town. I started attending the day after Christmas and TODAY I got up bright and early for a spin class that started at 5:30 am. That’s huge…I’m such a night owl! ;) I’m resolving to get started and stay in a good work out routine to hopefully loose a few inches – which will be rewarded in the form of some new duds! I’d also like to start rising early in general day-to-day, to prepare my mind/heart – these early classes should help!!
    What are you resolving today?

I LOVE this post! Another one of my blog friends wrote today about the new year not being about resolutions but RESOLVE and I couldn’t agree more with both of you. Exactly what has been on my heart lately.
I have never been a big one on resolutions and this year I felt even stronger about it. Make better, more determined choices every day and see the Power of God shine through your life with each new day and choice like never before.
The thing about it is that it’s usually not about one “big” resolution that people can’t keep, it’s about the hundreds of little choices that lead up to keeping that resolution. So instead of tackling the “big” one, I choose to resolve to choose better in the little ones that will ultimately transform me much more dramatically than the “big” one ever could.

I totally agree! I started my new healthier diet/workout this week and I feel better than if I was still waiting for Friday to come.
    Great insight Sarah!

The Lord has given me an epiphany at the conclusion of a breaking, shaping year. While most of us know that we aren’t to be ruled by our emotions, it is a difficult concept to grasp in the natural for me. Yesterday’s daily reading with my husband (a new and awesome habit we’ve been working on) was about the emotion-driven wife from Jimmy Evans’ Marriage on the Rock. I’m not the dominant wife or the docile-floormat one. I’m the emotion-driven one, and I see that as the root of some of my issues in so many areas of my life. I resolve, TODAY, to not be ruled by my emotions. Emotions that make me want to eat more, not work out, argue, have a bad attitude, be sad or angry, dwell on the past, or otherwise impede my relationship with God, my husband, and my family and friends will be a thing of the past. Only by the grace of God….=)

I read my bible this morning and I started using our wii fit Christmas day. I knew it wouldn’t happen if I kept waiting til New Years.

  11. Alli says:

Ok, ok, well, I have begun one part of my “resoluting”…we are beginning to carefully clean out, organize, and pack things we won’t need until we move! That other part, about losing those 30 pounds…that really does have to wait. I got into the habit of buying convenience foods because they were cheaper and now I simply can’t bear to waste them, so I will finish the last of them this week, and start fresh with a new food shopping week on Monday!
    THanks for reminding me!

  12. Oly says:

I resolve to start spending time with God, to be thankful (for the good and the bad) and truly forgive. Also, to start running (again), eat better, organize, clean and cook for my family.

    Thank you for the encouragement.

    love-oly

  13. You’re right on Sarah: “If it is truly a resolution, resolute, resolved, then RESOLVE to begin now.” In reality, we only have right now. There’s no guarantee we’ll even make it to Friday.

    Here’s a powerful reminder of that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Cw8I8eukaI

I am resolving today to see women as beautiful, life giving humans, my sisters.

Thank you for the reminder to decide now. It’s so easy to put off being who we want until a later time.

    i. needed. this.

    thank you.

  15. that is so true sarah. i find myself often saying… well on monday i will stop eating all those chocolate chip cookies, i will start counting my points on WW, i will drink more water, eat more fruits/veggies, etc..

i WILL drink more water today, spend more quiet time with the LORD, eat more fruit and vegetables, limit sweets and fountain soda :o ) i did get back into an exercise groove. i purchased two more workout videos for at home to shake thing up a bit. if i get bored, my motivation falters. hoping to ditch 15-20 lbs by spring.

    resolve to do it today!

  16. I don’t know how I missed this post!! I am going to stop hanging out on the sidelines, telling myself I can’t do what God wants me to do, stop convincing myself I am not ready, stop dragging my feet because it is so far out of my comfort zone.

He obviously has a different opinion, and it is time for me to get out of His way :-)

Blessings to you this evening, praying for a joyful, stretching, and leaning on God year for all of us.
