You are not the lies your parents have told you.
You are not the lies that life
and men
and bad friends have taught you.
screw-up
worthless
stupid
forgettable
ugly
You simply are not.
I know that you think what you are doing does not make a difference. That you are wasting away in a job or a life that feels so small. It feels so tiny compared to the rest of the world.
You feel un-pretty, un-lovable, un-chosen. You feel un-worthy, un-found, un-seen.
Or you are starting to think that you are invisible and that fading away might not be such a bad idea…
You are not the lies that others have told you.
I know they feel true. They feel like they rule you, turn your head, and call your name. They feel so very real.
Instead you are the total of what is true.
Truth: you are important.
Truth: you can be healthy.
Truth: you are loved.
Truth: it won’t always be this way.
Truth: you are seen.
Truth: what you think matters.
Truth: what you DO matters.
You ARE the sum of what is true.
Today, let’s recount some lies that others have told us about ourselves. And then tell what truth we’ve come to realize.
I’ll go first: A youth leader communicated to me once that if a girl to has a strong opinion she should keep it quiet. I believed it for awhile until I learned that it was an absolute lie.
Your turn…

Lie: If you act like yourself you will never be anything. You must do {fill in the blank} to be acceptable and fit in.
Truth: I am beautiful and wonderfully made! Personality and all…who I am and what I am is exactly what God has for me to bring to this world!
Lie: I ruined my mother’s life by being born.
Truth: I am not a mistake made by two teenagers. I was knit together by the almighty Hand of God and my life has purpose and value.
So needed this post today….
Lie: There are too many to list…
Truth: I am God’s.
[...] Sarah Markley wants you to know that you are not the lies that life has taught you [...]
The lie I was told was I’d never amount to anything in life. I hear this over and over again. But I am something. I am a child of God, a wife, a mom, and friend.
Thanks for this. I love it!
This is one of my favorite blog posts of all time. I re-read it when I need to. . . which is sometimes often.
Thank you.
