Stealing From Her

I was going to write a post today.

But I don’t think I am. Not a normal one anyway.

To write a post right now would be to steal me away from the littlest, most important person in my life. The one who’s toenail polish is chipping on her feet that are growing bigger each day. The one who holds a special under her arm everywhere she goes. A small stuffed animal that she never drops, never loses and never leaves.

To write a post right now, at least in the way I want to, would take me away from a television show on the couch under a blanket. It would take me away from reading out loud a Dr. Suess together. It would take my love and divide it with the world in a way she does not deserve.

To write something good and epiphany-loaded right now would be to take all my presence and give it here, to you, and that is something I cannot do today. I would be stealing from her and that is something, for today at least, I will not do.

I will click “publish” and then I will draw up my littlest to my lap and hold her close. She’ll only be 5 for 2 more weeks and I will then never have her again quite as small, quite as innocent, quite as compact as she is today.

What or who should you give your attention to today?

  1. Such a great point, Sarah. I have been spending some extra time cuddling with my 5 year old this week, too. How can I say no when he looks at me with those puppy dog eyes? When I know this season won’t last forever? When I know how much he just wants to feel my love through my presence? Reggie Joiner says some great things about spending time with kids. That it’s not about quantity time vs. quality time. That it’s about having a quantity of quality time. Glad you took some today- and even made an insightful post out of it!

Sorry to disappoint you Sarah, but you DID write something good and epiphany loaded today! God bless you as you have special time with your little – I still have those times with my little and he’s 15 and almost 6 feet tall( I guess not so little anymore) !

Thank you. I needed this reminder this week. My college semester just started and I’ve been quite overwhelmed between school, homework, housework, and other commitments. I need to make sure I save time for my five year old daughter. She plays so well on her own most of the time that it is easy to just let her. But she needs and deserves my attention as well.

After two years of following your blog, Sarah, this is absolutely my favorite post yet. I love it! ☺ Blessings!

My daughter just turned 17, 3 days ago and I often feel remorse for the times when I didn’t stop to be attentive to the little things she needed. It is such a difficult thing to give the proper attention to all the responsibilities that are laid at our doorstep. Undoubtedly, what you have written here is a valuable lesson we need to be reminded of often. Psalm 127:3 “Children are a heritage from the Lord.” May WE be a blessing to THEM today as we are blessed by the little words they say and the things they do.

It’s not too late!! She still needs your ATTENTION! She may not say it, but trust me, the need is still there and more valuable than ever.

Sarah, love this post. I wish I had thought more this way when my kids were little. I think you’re such a fabulous writer and you can’t help but inspire when you speak from your heart. But it’s even better to know that you are a fabulous mother. Way way more important. Thanks for blogging.

She is so adorable, I hope you have lots of time to cuddle and listen and enjoy your miracle.

Well done! I wish more parents would close the laptop, take the day off work, let the dishes sit, and just live in the moment with their children. Time passes too quickly and they deserve more from us!

I hope you two had a wonderful day and that many memories were made!

    :)

I gave it to my best girlfriend yesterday (Sunday) and who comes to our town to take her “Granny” to WalMart to groceries after Church and she lives about 5 blocks from us. I called to invite her by but she said she was not taking her this week, but next week she would come by. My husband “doubts” her stories, but I love her caring. And I loved your blog. You are so dedicated to family stuff; you’re incredible! Thanks!
