Good Guys and Bad Guys {or, What I’ve Learned at The Playground}

I’m on Deeper Story today talking about how we label each other.

You’re bad.

I’m good.

We’re better than they are.

It gets a little silly.

Today I’m trying to delve into the idea that we should all see one another as whole people, not all good or all bad.

Good Guys and Bad Guys

“Bang, bang!” The little girl yells. And follows up with, “I’m the good guy, you’re the bad guy!”

“I’m gonna get you!” the little boy screams back at her.

These are sounds I hear at the playground. I rarely fit in with extroverted, social moms so I sit by myself. I never mind the solitude.

Kids run in front of me and behind my bench, they dash up the stairs of the play structure and race down the slides. And for the most part they are good-natured in their play.

They are all different races and sizes and ages and I love it that the playground, at least where I live, knows very little racial or social distinction.

Yet children, even as color-blind as they are, categorize each other in different ways.

They play cops and robbers or bad lifeguards and good lifeguards {don’t ask me, there were fish/sharks/dolphins involved} and place each other (sometimes unwillingly) into good and bad categories.

The littlest among them always ends up coerced into being the monster of the bunch.

And I know why they do it. We live in a world that, in some ways, still values a distinction between good and bad, between holy and evil and between right and wrong…

  1. Sarah-Your little Kinder is always holding a stuffed animal. You have said this before and I thought, Really? But it seems to be true. There’s always a little glimpse of her furry loves in every photo she is in.

I read your whole post, yet through her photo I thought, wouldn’t it be great if I could just own where I am at? Except the growth stage I am in, not try to be older or younger.

    • I meant accept. Accept.

yes, heather. for the last 3 years she has carried a stuffed animal under her left arm. it’s like an appendage. this week it’s a dolphin. last week it was a christmas kitty. who knows what it will be next week. she recycles them a lot too. =)

I don’t usually comment on your posts, but I am going thru a dark time, similar to where you were years ago. Every post you write speaks to me in more ways than you know and pulls me thru the hardest days. Thank you my friend.

    • Sarah Markley says:

I’m so sorry heather. my prayers for you tonight. i will be thinking of you and praying for you.
